Persons living with disabilities (PWDs) in Malindi, Kilifi County have lamented the increase in the number of beggars masquerading as PWDs area.
According to local, the said fake beggars are operating freely at the mercies of some administrative leaders and police authorities.
They claimed that majority fake PWDs are mainly Tanzanians who may have been trafficked into the country by unknown agents.
The further says the same agents have also hired innocent locals to wheel them around as they beg for money from unsuspecting people within Malindi town.
This was revealed after a representative of persons living disabilities, Ms Thima, acting on a tip off from residence decided to give one of the beggar sh1000 and to her shock they guy jumped out of the wheel chair with excitement and started walking.
“I had heard that some of the beggars are fake, but I couldn’t act on that information because I did not have evidence. However, I recently encountered an eleven-year-old lad who on receiving Sh1,000 from me forgot that he was ‘disabled’ and jumped from the wheelchair and started walking,’’ Thima told journalists.
She immediately confronted the youngster, who would later name others who operate in similar manner within the town.
The youngster was arrested and taken to police station where he was confirmed not disabled.
