Marriage Bill To Propose Time Limit For Cohabitation
Tororo Woman MP Sarah Opendi Achieng has revealed that she had finalized consultations from a number of stakeholders about the Marriage Bill and they are ready to present it before the Ugandan Parliament.
Among the many things that she intends to discuss in the bill are the couples that cohabit for a long time without legally getting married.
“Close to 65 percent of Ugandans are cohabiting. It is unfair to live with somebody’s son or daughter for ten years while not legally registered as a married couple,” she revealed.
She further stated that she is yet to finalize a clause that will see these couples registered legally as married after cohabitation for a certain period of time. This would result in an equal distribution of shared assets and property.
Hon. Opendi wants the new bill to emulate the one in Malawi where couples are registered as married after six months of cohabiting.
