Southampton Relegated From The English Premier League

Southampton was demoted after an 11-year spell in the top division following a 2-0 loss to Fulham on Saturday.

Southampton has seen a decade full of highs and lows as Mauricio Pochettino’s time on the south coast saw them rise to a top-10 team.

The Argentine took them to an eighth-place finish. Ronald Koeman took over for a couple of seasons and guided them to their best-ever Premier League finish of sixth in 2015-16. Under Claude Puel, they also advanced to the Carabao Cup final, where they were defeated by Manchester United 3-2.

Speaking after the game, their captain, James Ward Prowse, said;

“We need to go away individually and as a club and assess if we’ve done everything we possibly could. I don’t think we have, and that is a shame. I think as a team and as a club overall, we’ll think about the season that has gone by. Have the decisions been right? Have we done everything we could on the pitch?” He said.

Eight points behind Everton, who are currently 17th in the division and just above the relegation zone, with two games remaining and 24 points, there was no hope of survival for the St. Mary’s-based club.
