A man who has been known by residents of Maganjo, Wakiso District as a notorious thief and burglar has handed himself to the local authorities pleading for mercy.

Pius Rukundo, a resident of Mawu village, Nansana Municipality had made a name in snatching phones, bags and stealing money from his victims around the area. When they saw that the law would not stop him from stealing, the locals promised to beat him to death on sight.

When he heard the news of lynching him, Rukundo panicked and ran to the LC1 chairperson asking him to beg for forgiveness from the locals on his behalf in order to save his life.

Ssempala David, the village Defense revealed that the culprit had earlier begged to meet him in person and explain himself. In his statement he confessed to have tormented his village mates and begged the local council to rather take him to the police so that he escapes the wrath of the people.

“I’m tired of being on the run. I can’t keep running and living in fear like this so I beg the council to at least hand me over to the police. I rather die from custody than be killed by people,” Rukundo cried out.

The local authorities took Rukundo to Maganjo Police station and a case under file number SDREF; 29/29/06/2023 was opened. He waits to be arraigned in court to be charged for robbery and theft.
