”One Prisoner, One bed, One mattress”, Declares CS Kindiki
Interior Cabinet Secretary Professor Kithure Kindiki has announced that starting June, all prisoners will be served lunch every time they attend their hearings.
Speaking to the prisoners in Mwea prison, CS Kindiki said that there are many suggestions that he received from the prisoners and he promised to implement them all at his level as the minister of interior.
Kindiki said that apart from the prisoners being allowed to get food during the trial, they will also be allowed to have conversations with close relatives from the family, which is currently prohibited.
“You have asked about lunch for those going to the trial and also being allowed to speak with the family. I don’t see any problem in talking to family members. I know that the budget may not be enough to feed them, but we will make sure that every officer and prisoner who attends the trial will have lunch. Therefore, from June every prisoner must be given food,” Kindiki said.
The CS also said that each prisoner will be given his/her own bed and mattress to improve their lives while they serve their sentences in prison.
‘’Improving the welfare of inmates and Prisons staff is a priority for the Government. Directed that all prisoners be kitted with two pairs of uniform and through partnership with the private sector, implement the ‘One Prisoner, One bed, One mattress ‘ program’’ said the CS
The sailors will also be given two new uniforms each and those for minor offenses will be given punishments outside jail as one way to reduce backlog of prisoners in prison.
