Anna Nyakato at Katwe Police

A woman has been arrested and locked up by police in Katwe for scamming different people of their money and promising to secure them work visas to Europe.

 

Nyakato Anna was apprehended by the police after more than ten people who have fallen victim to her scam reported to police stating that she stole over UGX 150 million from them. She reportedly convinced her victims that she had worked with different state ministers whom she helped travel to America and Canada.

 

At the police station some of the victims like Nalule Allen & Ssenjala Richard, Mulindwa Frank, Namaganda Esther,Nakato Immaculate, and another woman who preferred anonymity were scammed of Ush 7, 26, 15 and 10 million respectively.

 

The victims claimed that Nyakato would disappear every time they asked her about their travel plans or demand for  their money. They tried filing cases against her at different police stations in vain until she was arrested in Katwe.

 

“She lied to us that she would take us to America and Canada in a diplomatic way alongside the ministers. She scammed us and when we tried getting her arrested, she would be released without us getting justice or our money back,” one of the victims said.

 

After her arrest, Nyakato admitted to obtaining money from her victims but claimed that their documents had been denied at the embassy. She however revealed that she was working on refunding their money.

 

Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Onyango Patrick confirmed Nyakato’s arrest at Katwe Police station as investigations into the matter go on. She will be presented before court to answer for charges of obtaining money in false pretence plus theft of a car.
