World Press Freedom: Equip Media With Latest Technology, Says Owalo

ICT CS Eliud Owalo has said that the media needs to provide journalists with adequate ICT equipment for work.

Speaking during World Press Freedom Day at the Safari Park hotel, Owalo said the equipment provided should be used in newsrooms and in the field.

“This will ensure currency of information and proper audience interaction,” he said.

CS added that technology has brought convenience to the audience as one can watch, listen and read what they want, where and when they want.

“Smart media houses have taken advantage of this technology to build large and loyal digital audiences. There is a need for training to equip journalists with digital skills, including training in the use of news from social networks,” Owalo said.

Regarding the freedom of the media, Owalo said the media is very powerful in the Post-Truth Era we live in today.

“Reliable information is becoming increasingly difficult to find. Those who invented various social media platforms had every good intention to give our generation the opportunity to communicate and share knowledge and experience,” he explained.

“Unfortunately, these platforms are increasingly distinguishing themselves by selling fake news, fake news and even deliberate lies.”
