Omanyala To Lead Kenyan Athletes In Gaborone
The African record holder for 100 meters, Ferdinand Omanyala, will aim to continue his successful season on Saturday at the Worlds Continental Tour in Garborone.
Omanyala has been in excellent shape this year, winning the Athletics South Africa (ASA) Grand Prix 1 with a finishing time of 10.12 just two weeks ago. Letsile Tebogo of Botswana holds the global under-20 100-meter record, and Omanyala will have to be at his best to win the race.
Mary Moraa of Kenya, who won the Diamond League and Commonwealth championships in 2022 and finished third in the 800m, drops down to compete in the 400m against Jamaica’s Candice McLeod, who finished fourth in the 800m; Kyra Jefferson of the United States; and Naledi lopang and Thompang Basele of Botswana.
Kenya’s Olympic silver medalist Ferguson Rotich also runs in the men’s 800m against fellow countryman Abel Kipsang, who won the bronze medal in the world indoor 1500m last year.
In an effort to improve their skills before the World Championships in Budapest in August, the Kenyan 4x100m relay team of Omanyala, Samuel Imeta, Hesbon Ochieng, Steve Onyango, and Wiseman Were is also in Botswana.
In the international standings, where the top 16 teams automatically qualify for Budapest, the Kenyan team is presently ranked 18th.
