Muslim Man Nabbed Stealing From The Mosque
A Muslim man was yesterday nabbed red handed stealing money from a collection box in Masjid Hamisi located in Makerere – Kavule, Kawempe Division.
Quraish Lukwago was found in possession of a curved wire that he used to insert inside the box and remove money notes that had been dropped in by Muslims. His arrest comes after he was caught live on the CCTV camera placed inside the mosque. He pretended to have entered the room to read the Quran but was instead stealing money.
“I saw our fellow brother moving up and down and I wondered what he was looking for. I gave it time and watched him until he sat near the box. He pulled out his small torch and started picking money from the box while fixing it in his pocket,” a member of the mosque stated.
When he was finally confronted, Lukwago pleaded for mercy stating that he was stealing in order to feed his wife who had just given birth.
“I beg my fellow Muslims to forgive me because they caught me red handed and it was a mistake. I have accepted my mistakes but I beg for mercy as I won’t do it again,” Lukwago pleaded.
Muslims rubbished his pleas, recalling how money has been disappearing from the mosque. They also accused him of fleecing another mosque in Wandegeya of Ush300,000 before this incident. Many eye witnesses revealed they always spotted him entering the mosque from 9:30-10 PM but would not stop him because the place of worship was open to everyone.
“We put cameras in the mosque because of such cases. Many times people give in money but we find the box almost empty,” another stated.
Lukwago was then locked in the Imam’s office for Muslims to continue with their prayers and later handed over to the police.
His incident comes a few weeks after a video went viral on social media showing a Moslem stealing maize flour. Muslims have advised their colleagues to do away with theft especially in the Ramadan season as it is punishable by Allah.
