Didier Drogba: I Don’t Recognise Chelsea Any More
Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba says he does not “recognise the club” after losing match against Real Madrid in the Champions League.
“It is not the same club any more. I don’t recognise my club. There is a new owner and a new vision,” Drogba, 45, told Canal+.
According to Drogba, the 4-0 loss and the current position of Chelsea in the Premier League imply that the club might not participate in any European competition next year.
Between 2004 and 2012, the 56 years old footballer won 12 major honors at Stamford Bridge under previous owner Roman Abramovich.
Drogba praised Abramovich’s management terming him as a smart problem solver.
“A dressing room with 30 players is difficult to manage for the coach, whoever he is. We try to compare with what was done under the Abramovich era, where there were many acquisitions of players, but the choices were very intelligent,” he stated.
Abramovich’s backing in 2003 turned Chelsea into serial trophy winners before Todd Boehly took ownership in May 2022.
However, under Todd’sleadership, Drogba was forced to sell his club after being sanctioned by the United Kingdom over allegation that he had links with the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Chelsea former midfielder Gus Poyet also commented on the Tuesday’s match pointing out that: “There are probably reasons for the transition. We can’t be too short-term with it. People will make a lot out of this season for Chelsea because we’ve had so much success. The reality is that this club is going to be back.”
