One Dead, Several Injured In Building That Collapsed During A Football Match
Business came to a standstill in Kansanga, Kampala City after a building collapsed yesterday during the English Premier League match between West Ham United and Arsenal yesterday evening.
Football lovers met their fate as they were enjoying an evening at Loi Lung restaurant near Kampala International University (KIU) around 5:00 OM when Arsenal netted their second goal.
According to eyewitnesses, they tried to rescue at least seventeen people who were rushed to hospital for medical attention.
“We heard a very loud noise of something falling. When we rushed to the scene, we found the restaurant had already crashed. We tried to rescue the ones we could,” one of the rescuers said.
At the time the tragic incident happened, 24-year-old Awier Mario, the manager of the place was feared dead while two more people were suspected to still be stuck in the debris of the collapsed structure.
Residents blamed the events on Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) for not supervising and checking the conditions of the buildings around the area.
“All problems stem from KCCA who allow such buildings to operate. This building was in existence but they added metallic structures on top,” Francis Seguya, the Kansanga LC chairperson revealed.
