Two Buried Alive In Stone Quarry Collapse
Residents of Kengera Town Council, Wakiso District are living in fear after the stone quarry in their area buried two workers alive.
The deceased identified as Francis Oryagutumu and Twine Dorah, all residents of Magwa Mpangala are said to have died on 5th April, 2023 at 10:00 AM as they were looking for stones for sale from the stone quarry before the loose soil and rocks collapsed and buried them.
Residents in the area who had gathered to dig out the two bodies revealed that the death toll from quarry continues to rise as it claims lives almost every month. They say the soil keeps breaking off the cliffs especially in the rainy season, something that endangers human lives.
“This quarry has killed so many people and we ask the government to have it closed down. They should get a bulldozer and cover it with soil because we have lost a lot of lives,” a concerned resident revealed.
They further requested the authorities to create more jobs for the locals in the area upon the closure of the quarry because most people had turned it into their source of livelihood.
On addressing the issue, Kyengera Town Council mayor, Sir Mathias Walukagga blamed the local leaders in the area for not reporting about the hazardous places to the relevant authorities for solutions.
“I would have ordered for the closure of this quarry but they did not inform me about it. People are risking their lives for the love of money which is wrong,” Walukagga revealed.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango confirmed the tragic incident and cautioned locals against going to the quarry especially during this rainy season.
“The problem may have been caused by the rain that we received at night, weakening the foundation of this quarry. These people must have started digging out the stones from the already soggy soils, causing the collapse,” he said.
