Couple Dies After Bus “Horn” Pushes Them Off The Road Into River

Hajarah Natooro and Sadat Ssenkungu died in River Mayanja

A married couple has perished in an accident that happened at River Mayanja after they were swerved off the road by a bus horn.

The deceased identified as Hajarah Natooro and Sadat Ssenkungu both aged 32 were driving from their hardware shop at around 9:00 PM in their Vitz car, plate number UAU 926G headed to their home in Buyala, Mityana Road when they drove into River Mayanja.

According to the eyewitness Arafat Mukalazi, the tragic accident was caused by a high speeding bus that hooted. The pregnant Hajarah, who was behind the wheels reportedly got scared and drove off the road straight into the river where they both died on spot.

“The bus hooted non-stop and maybe being a woman, she was distracted and scared and tried to go on the other side of the road but unfortunately fell into the river. Due to the pressure of the water, it swept them away,” he said.

At the couple’s marital home where mourners had already gathered after hearing the sad news, the neighbours revealed that they left behind a one year old child.

“They died in pain. They left behind a baby, the whole family is distraught. As residents we are so sad because they were good people,” Katongole Stephen, a neighbor to the deceased couple revealed.

The residents who were present at the scene called out police for the delay in sending a rescue team when contacted.

“We ask the police to always come through immediately as soon as they get such news. If they had come earlier, maybe our people would not have died. They took their time and again tried to sabotage the people who were trying to help,” Stephen added.

Hajarah was laid to rest in Taka Junge, Masaka District while Ssenkugu was buried at Bulinda Village, Kalisizo Kyotera District.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the accident and urged all motorists to avoid over speeding.
