Residents in Matugga, Kampala are in dismay after one of their own was killed by a machine at the factory where he worked.

The deceased, identified as Martin Kayanga 26, was a casual laborer at a Chinese factory Zinc, Iron & Steel Limited. Fellow workers who were present at the time of the tragedy revealed that Kayanga accidentally slid and fell onto the machine that melts iron and it cut off his head.

The deceased’s wife, Namusoke Fiona who was in the company of her brother in law approached the company to witness and get a clear story on what had happened but they were denied entry into the premises. The inconsolable Namusoke recounted how lively her husband was that fateful morning before leaving for work.

“He bid me farewell saying he was coming to work because he had to look after me and our pregnancy. At around 10:00 Am, someone called me crying and told me how my husband’s head had been cut off,” she said amidst tears.

Namusoke who is heavily pregnant is left wondering how she will survive without her husband as he was the sole breadwinner for both his small family and his people back home.

The deceased’s brother Kayanga Fred whose fingers were also cut off in line of duty at the same company has called out his employers for neglecting the lives of their employees.

“I had a talk with them to give me treatment after the accident I sustained at their factory which led to the loss of some of my fingers. I am seeking justice for myself and on behalf of the deceased’s family,” he said.

Residents also called out the government for not taking action against foreign companies that ill-treat Ugandans and not care about the lives of the youths that work with them.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango confirmed the tragic incident and noted that investigations had commenced.

“They tried rushing him to Mulago Hospital to get help but he did not make it as he died on arrival. As the police, we have visited the scene, collected what we need and got statements from the witnesses. Investigations are ongoing and we will have a chat with the family as soon as they get back from the burial,” he said.
