School Fence Collapses, Kills Woman On Spot
Residents in Mukungwe, Nyendo Masaka District woke up to terrible news after a school wall crumbled and killed one of their own who was passing by.
The victim identified as Betty Nabulonge 24, was reportedly taking her phone to her neighbor’s place for charging and while passing near Centenary High School, the fence unfortunately came crashing down, killing her on spot and leaving two others injured.
According to the residents near the school, they heard loud noises of the falling wall and when they rushed to the scene, they discovered the deceased buried deep in debris. Rescuers state that they had a hard time digging through and by the time they got to Betty, she had already passed on.
Prior to the collapse, the crumbled wall is reported to have been in poor conditions and for a long time, the locals have been calling upon the stakeholders of the school to knock it down to avoid such incidents but they had not responded.
The angry residents who had come at the scene vowed to break down the remaining part of the fence claiming that the structures were very old, weary and foundations filled with water. They tried taking matters into their own hands by knocking it down and accessing the school premises but police arrived on time and struggled to disperse them.
The deceased left behind a six months old child and residents want the school owners to take up the responsibilities and also police to make it a point that the entire fence is brought down to avoid more tragic events.
The officer in charge of Nyendo Division police post, Guloba Hassan Wesige revealed that the body of the deceased together with the injured identified Namukasa Stella and Namayengo Patricia were rushed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem and further treatment respectively.
