Home » Student Discovered Hanging Dead In Police Cell

Police in Namutumba District have commenced investigations into circumstances under which a student mysteriously died in a police cell.

The deceased identified as Mukama James, a senior two student at Busembatia Secondary School was found hanging in a cell at Bugobi Police Post where he was kept. The deceased’s sister Nabudo Bridgette revealed he had been arrested last week on Friday after he was suspected for stealing one of the resident’s passport and two saucepans.

Nabudo had gone to Namutumba District for the residual mosquito spraying activity and says she heard about his brother’s arrest and quickly rushed to the police station to confirm if the allegations leveled against him were true, something he denied.

“We were planning to go to court this week, but his death has shocked us. My brother has been a hardworking boy committed to his garden where he gets school fees. His death is a very big loss to us as a family because our father has lost an heir.” The distraught Nabudo said.

Namumbya Veronica, the deceased’s other sister revealed she last spoke to her brother on Sunday evening and during their conversation, he opened up about how ‘bad’ the police cell was.

The Bugobi Town Council District councilor, Nandabi Moses called out the police for delaying the investigations into the crimes slapped on the deceased who he says was detained for more than 24 hours instead of being presented in court.

Nandaula Diana, the Busoga East Police spokesperson revealed that police are doing their best to establish the cause of death who she confirms committed suicide.
