Shock gripped pupils and stakeholders of Kalalaka Primary School in Butebo District after a seven year old pupil collapsed and died during an athletics competition.

 

The deceased identified as Bamwilile Joseph, a P.1 pupil was among the pupils who participated in the inter-house games and ran 110 meter race. It is reported that he joined the race without the consent of his teachers and after going for about 10 meters, Bamwilile allegedly fell down.

 

He was rushed to Butebo Health Center IV for first aid but was unfortunately pronounced dead on arrival.

 

“The teachers of P.3-P.6 had taken their pupils for athletics. Bamwilile Joseph, P.1 pupil fell down after 10m and collapsed. We immediately informed the headteacher who ordered them to carry the pupil to Butebo Health Center IV for medication. Unfortunately when they reached the hospital, the doctors informed the teachers that their pupil had passed on.” Semewo Samuel, the North Region police spokesperson confirmed the unfortunate events.

 

According to the school headteacher Wasenya Ahamed, Bamwilile’s death would have been prevented if he had paid attention to his teacher’s advice of the lower primary pupils not to participate in the race.
