Police in Lumu village, Mbale City are investigating circumstances under which a young man was beaten to death by the mob after he killed his grandfather in land wrangles.

78 year old Wamateke Abimeleki was discovered in his house gruesomely murdered by his grandson identified as Wamimbi Lauben who had just relocated back to his village from Kenya. It is reported that the two got into a huge disagreement after Wamateke refused to give his grandson a piece of his land.

Witnesses narrate that Wamimbi attacked his grandfather as he was in his bedroom trying to take his nap. After butchering the old man to death, the suspect then covered his wounded body with a bed sheet to try and cover up the crime.

After committing the gruesome murder, he left the crime scene and went to a local church. When people approached him, the guilty Wamimbi fell on his knees and while he tried to beg for his life, he subconsciously confessed to the crime amidst tears.

They dragged him back to the crime scene and in the evening at around 8PM, Wamimbi was also murdered by the mob.

Some of the residents tag this cruel crime to the fact that the suspect abused drugs and on numerous occasions, he threatened to end his grandfather’s life.

Elgon Region police spokesperson James Taitika Rogers confirmed the crime and revealed active investigations had been opened. He further advised members of the public from taking matters into their own hands.

The two dead bodies were taken to the referral hospital for postmortem.
