The deceased siblings

Panic filled the residents of Kigangazi Town Council, Bukomansimbi District after they discovered dead bodies of two toddlers who had drowned in the pond.

The deceased were identified as Brian Nsereko, 10 and his young brother Pius Ssevume aged 8. It is reported that after the two siblings came back from school at around 6PM, their mother Josephine Namatovu sent them to collect water but waited for them to get back in vain.

The distraught mother narrated that she sent their other sibling to look for them and on his way; he was notified by the deceased’s friends of the tragic events.

“Before he got to the pond, the friends asked him if his brothers were at home because they had seen floating shirts and jerrycans down in the well.” She narrated.

On hearing the shocking news, Namatovu quickly rushed to the scene to confirm the sad news which turned out to be true.

The father of the deceased brothers Yudah Ssevume revealed that he witnessed his sons going to fetch the water on his way from work. He was however shocked by the news of their death shortly.

Locals have expressed their concern about the increasing number of people who drown in these ponds around the village. They blame this on the water scarcity in the area that forces authorities to dig up ponds to increase the supply.

“Many children are losing their lives. We thought the ponds would help us since the well is far but they are instead killing more people.” A concerned resident said.

According to the reports in the area, at least ten people have drowned in these ponds in a space of just one year. Residents therefore called upon the government to put up more hand well pumps to solve the scarcity.

“I have alerted the CAO to see that we repair our hand well pumps. We want our people safe and with clean water because that is the main aim of the government.” Bukomansimbi Deputy RDC Fred Kalema Pax promised the residents

The bodies of the deceased brothers were retrieved by police and given to the family for burial.
