Husband Jailed For 40 Years Over Burning His Wife, Three Children To Death

Vianney Armstrong Ahimbisibwe being escorted by wardens out of the dock following his sentencing at Kabale High Court on February 22, 2023.

Residents of Habutobere Village, Muko Sub-county in Rubanda District woke up in great shock in June 2021 when a family man burned alive his wife and three children.

Armstrong Vianney Ahimbisibwe locked his children Edwin Tumworobire, 17, and Westlife Akampumuriza, 15, Maria Akwire Akinamushabire together with his wife Muheki Robinah in the house before setting it ablaze.

Upon police investigation, Armstrong  was arrested shortly after the incident. He was staying in a different home at the time of the crime because he had separated from his wife following a misunderstanding.

Armstrong (46) was among the many prisoners brought before Justice Samuel Emokor on Wednesday at Kabale High court to receive his sentence.

He was charged for murder, torture and arson and was sentenced behind bars for forty years with a period of 1 year and eight months he spent in prison deducted off his time.

As the judge read out his sentence he expressed his disgust on how Armstrong would choose to take the lives of his family members without remorse.

“Putting into consideration the submission of the state prosecution calling for a deterrence sentence by punishing the convict basing on the number of people he murdered, the fact that he did not take lives of foreigners but his immediate family members to achieve his pre-determined evil motives, he is hereby sentenced 40 years for each count of murder,” Justice Emokor added.

Giving his remarks, Armstrong begged the judge for a lighter sentence because he claims he committed the crime out of bitterness.

Kigezi Regional police spokesperson Elly Maatte hailed the court for the ruling saying it will act as an example to the people who think they can commit crimes and escape justice.

‘I want people to learn from this case. Stay away from solving issues out of anger and instead sit at a round table and come up with solutions.’ Maate said.

Ahimbisibwe was given 14 days to appeal his sentence if he was not content with the ruling.
