Promoter To Sue Jose Chameleone Over Failure To Perform At Paid Event
Ashraf, a Moroto based music promoter is seeking to drag local musician Joseph Mayanja alias Jose Chameleone to court for failure to perform at a concert he had been paid for.
Appearing before the press, Ashraf who also operates as Mulla Events claims that he organized the ‘Wale Wale Festival’ on 13th January 2023 but the Leone Island singer never showed up and he is seeking to recover Shs. 150million in spent expenses.
Ashraf noted that they had agreed to pay the artist UGX 13 million in total, 5 million was paid up front with the balance to be cleared at the venue.
The concert being on Friday, Chameleone was to arrive on Thursday and be present for radio interviews and drives so they organized for the day but he never showed up. Among the expenses incurred in putting the show together included the chopper, stage and lights and marketing the event.
“I paid 3000 USD to airlift Chameleone from Kampala to Moroto for the performance. “He never did any of these things. The region is so big and we went through the 7 districts doing the drives and putting up banners for a week and a half.” He said.
On the day of the concert, Chameleone’s manager lied that the artist was on the way and Mulla events went ahead to collect money from revelers who had come for the show. Surprisingly, Chameleone instead went for Spice Diana’s concert at another venue, snubbing the one had been paid for.
Ansfrah adds that the artist’s failure to show up at the venues caused him harm as he was beaten by fans and the property and the venue destroyed.
‘I lost my teeth and my arm got damaged. I’m at a big loss because I had borrowed money for this show and every day the interest goes up.” He said.
Ashraf says he reported the case at both Katwe and Moroto Police Station but has not been helped and through his lawyers, Elgon Advocates, he is looking at suing the artist for breach of contract
“We advised him to write a demand notice to see if they can settle outside court. If they do not come through in 4 days, we will take them to court demanding for the money spent because the hotel where the show was organized summoned our client demanding payment for the property destroyed by fans after the artist not turning up.” His lawyer said.
