5 Arrested Over Illegal Child Marriage
In a bid to abolish child marriages, police have arrested a group of relatives who had forced their teenage daughter into early marriage.
This happened in Western Uganda, Kiruhura District where five people were arrested for the forceful child marriage of their 17 year old school girl. These have been charged with kidnap, trafficking and aggravated defilement.
The victim who was kept anonymous was currently in her form four vacation looking forward to further her studies for A Levels. She is currently managed by experts from the gender unit at CID headquarters.
Confirming their arrests before the press, Uganda Police Force Spokesperson, SCP Fred Enanga listed the names of some of the accused as Katera John, the uncle to the victim, Arinatitwe Sam, Kanzira Napoleone for facilitating the trafficking of the victim following the abduction.
The case was reported by the victim’s father to the police and the Directorate of CID in coordination with Kiruhura Territorial police put in custody the suspects.
In Uganda, the constitution stipulates age 18 as the minimum legal age for marriage for both boys and girls. However, for many families across the various parts of the county, especially the rural areas, the rule is broken due to economic hardships and different customs.
