Revealed: Uhuru Kenyatta’s Security Scaled Down Not Withdrawn, Here’s Why
By Mideyah Digital Reporter February 3, 2023The Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome has explained why the National Police Service has scaled down retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s security details.
The IG says the state has not withdrawn security from Mr Kenyatta instead scaled down his security details terming it a normal procedure.
He warned that he would not be dragged into politics saying his office is independent and neutral.
“This is all about police formations. The person in-charge of Presidential Escort Unit that serves the Retired and Serving Presidents is led by an Assistant Inspector General. Once a President is retired, he is supposed according to the law, to be guarded by a Superintendent Police Officer,“he said.
Mr Koome said he thus recalled the officer and assigned him a commanding responsibility according to their rank.
Speaking to the press at the Moi International Airport in Mombasa, the IG said Former First Lady Mama Ngina has her personal security.
“Let us not mix issues, and do not drag IG into politics…the former presidents/retired homes are still under state protection,” he added.
He said the state has also scaled down security of former Cabinet Secretaries.
The IG said the former CSs and PSs are also retired and enjoying their retirement.
“Between a CS who is on active duty, reporting in office by 6am and leaves late and the one who retired, who needs to be protected? Let us not mix issues, and do not drag IG into politics,” he added.
He said if any of the senior leaders has any issues, they can reach out to him.
“I am available. Whatever has been done is in good faith,” he added.
