Azimio politician embroiled in controversy over Kamukunji Rally Remarks; NCIC investigates

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Leader Raila Odinga waves to supporters receiving him during Kamukunji Rally in Nairobi January 23rd 2023.
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned Korogocho Member of County Assembly Absalom Odhiambo Onyango over his utterances at the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Rally at Kamkunji Grounds on Monday 23rd January 2023.
The Mca who is expected to record a statement is said to spew ethnic slurs that can potentially stir hatred and incite Kenyans to violence.
“We are calling upon all leaders to stop actions and rhetoric that can trigger violence. For if unchecked violence started in one place will be repeated in another and before long the whole country will burn. In such an event, nobody wins and all of us lose,” the Commission stated in a statement.

Speaking during the rally, The ODM’s elected legislator, Odhiambo, used unprintable words to refer to President William Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.
“…Kwa siasa ya taifa tunataka tutoke twende ikulu tutoe huyo mwizi… Nataka tuingie town, tufunge biashara. Hakuna biashara itaendelea hii town ya Nairobi. Ndio William Ruto aheshimu Raila Odinga lazima tufunge biashara hii town,” Odhiambo said.
This loosely translates to, “For national politics, we want to go to the State House and remove that thief… I want us to go to town and close businesses. No business will go on in Nairobi. “For William Ruto to respect Raila Odinga, we must close businesses in this town.”
The NCIC now calls on all the leaders to stop what it terms “actions and rhetoric that can trigger violence,” while urging Kenyans to respect President William Ruto.
“Consequently, any actions that undermine the presidency will not only damage the national cohesion, but will also injure peace and unity among Kenyans,” The Commission Chair Samuel Kobia said.
