The Media Council of Kenya is set to hold a meeting on Friday, 27th Jan 2023 with stakeholders to weed out fraudsters masquerading as journalists.

In a statement released by MCK dated 26th, Jan, 2023, the meeting is set to install tactics and ways to tame fake journalists stealing on innocent Kenyans.

It has come to our attention that there is an escalation of fraudsters masquerading as journalists and media practitioners who get access to events with the intention of extorting and harassing people,” says David Omwoyo, MCK CEO.

Mr Omwoyo in the statement says, the council is always committed in fostering conducive environment for journalists and making sure there’s validity and credibility among journalists and what they report.

“MCK will remain at the forefront in protecting the credibility of the media and journalists by ensuring that only accredited journalists are allowed to practice in the country, in line with our Constitutional provisions,” Mr. Omwoyo added.

Of late, there has been a high rise of fraudsters in political forums, business events and social forums especially in big towns masquerading as journalists, fraudulently leaving those falling victims penniless.

It’s reported they walk dressed as journalists in MCK jackets with work tags purporting to be journalists. Others, it’s reported they’re using the names of prominent journalists to rob people.
