White Card In Football
Any football fanatic is certainly aware of two common cards issued by referee; Red and yellow card. However do you know there is a white card?
A white card, also known as the fair play card rewards positive acts on the pitch.
It was introduced by the Portuguese Football Federation with an aim of promoting sportsmanship by rewarding positive behaviour.
First White Card Shown In History
The historic white card made its appearance on Saturday 21,2023 during women’s football match between Sporting Lisbon and Benfica in Portugal and it was issued by referee Catarina Campos.
The appearance which came just before half-time, was meant to reward medical staff from both sides after they rushed to the aid of a fan who had fallen ill in the stands.
As the card was shown to the medical staff, the crowd rose to their feet in applause to the decision as the medics made their way back to the dugout.
The consequences of receiving a white card however is yet to be announced as we wait to see if other country will adopt its usage.
