Passengers using the Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway trains will now no longer use cash to pay for Services from 1st February,2023 limiting their options to mobile money and electronic cards in order to boost efficiency.

The train, which has been in operation since 2017, has over the years been using a mixed payment system that involves cash, mobile money, and electronic cards.
In a public notice, Kenya Railways corporation indicated that Customers have been advised to use M-Pesa, debit, or credit cards to pay.
We wish to notify our customers and the general public that effective February 1, 2023, we will no longer be accepting cash for the purchase of tickets at all Madaraka Express Passenger Service stations,” the notice reads.
 
The move is also in line with the Government’s plan to digitize services to enhance delivery and broaden the tax base.
 
Currently, the SGR service charges Sh1,000 for economy class tickets and Sh3,000 for first class tickets between Nairobi and Mombasa.
 
The SGR has played an important role in boosting Kenya’s economic growth, and the number of passengers using the SGR train has been on the rise.
