Dennis Okari, a celebrated Kenyan journalist revealed to Rev. Kathy Kiuna that a female boss denied him a job at Kenya Broadcasting Cooperation (KBC) after he failed to ‘read signs’ during the talk.

During the interview, Okari revealed that he faced several rejections in his early years in the media career, starting with his internship.

Okari disclosed that when he was looking for an internship at KBC after college, he was denied chances at the renowned media because he did not have a godfather.

Okari, a resilient journalist, visited the national head of communications who helped him join KBC as an intern.

A year after the unpaid internship, he revealed that his female boss at KBC once called him for screen coaching. During the coaching, he discovered she had worn a mini skirt that exposed her thighs.

I had a female boss who had an eye on me. She would call me to her office, she had a miniskirt so she would cross her legs like this and I’m sitting here like, Dennis, so this is how you read news, so this innocent born-again boy is looking at the script and looking at this.

“So, I could not reconcile the two but she’s old. What’s going on? I was not catching the vibes. Later on, kumbe she was getting frustrated I’m not getting it. It was like Joseph and Potiphar’s wife. Well, I was getting it partly but I was like no it can’t be, I’m imagining. So, a friend comes and tells me, Dennis wewe hushikanishi?” He narrated.

However, Okari didn’t know her intention until she axed him. “It was so bad that she terminated my contract. I was to move from internship to contract where I was to start earning Ksh 10,000 monthly. ..later, I got a memo inside the studio saying your services have been discontinued with effect from this day. I’ll never forget it.”

Months later, one person left and he was recalled to fill the position. Since then, he worked for several media stations including KTN and NTV until he joined the corporate industry.
