Meet Kenyan Woman Who Only Becomes Happy When Bad Things Befall Others

A Kenyan woman from Kiambu County has sparked heated debate online after a TikTok video claiming she derives happiness from witnessing misfortune in others’ lives went viral.
The video, shared by user Hithuria Show, features a woman identified as Wangeci detailing her unusual disposition. Wangeci states that since childhood, she has experienced a surge of positive emotions whenever she observes negativity impacting those around her.
“It’s not that I wish bad things on people,” Wangeci clarifies in the video, “but when someone trips and falls, or loses their keys, a strange sense of joy washes over me.” The video cuts to bewildered reactions from onlookers, highlighting the peculiarity of Wangeci’s claim.

Mental health professionals are cautiously analyzing the video. Dr. Muthoni Njeri, a renowned Kenyan psychiatrist, expressed concern. “While schadenfreude, or taking pleasure in another’s misfortune, is a common human experience, the intensity Wangeci describes could indicate underlying psychological issues.” Dr. Njeri recommends Wangeci seek professional help to understand the root cause of these emotions.
“Even myself I can’t really tell what happens in my brain. i just find myself being excited and happy when bad things happen to my close friends eg burial. The issue started back in preschool whee I could laugh loudly when someone’s food falls,” She is quoted.
The video has ignited a firestorm of comments online. Some viewers expressed skepticism, questioning the video’s authenticity. Others empathized with Wangeci, suggesting she might be struggling with a form of social anxiety or a negative self-image that leads to finding validation in misfortune.
