Gay Australian Footballer Josh Cavallo Proposes To His Boyfriend On The Pitch

In a rare occasion in football, Australian gay football player Josh Cavallo who plays as a left back and central midfielder for Australian A-League Men side Adelaide United, he proposed to his partner Leighton Morrell on the pitch at Adelaide United’s Coopers Stadium, Adelaide United’s home ground. He posted three photos on his Instagram account, one of which showed his boyfriend wearing an engagement ring, and thanked Adelaide United for their support and encouragement to live his life genuinely.
The 24-year-old Cavallo said that he knew he was gay from the age of 16 but was confused and too scared to talk about it. He worried that it would affect his football career if his sexuality became public. He first came out as gay in October 2021 becoming the world’s only top-flight openly gay men’s player since there were no other openly gay male footballers playing professional top-flight football. He said in a statement, “I hope that in sharing who I am, I can show others who identify as LGBTQ+ that they are welcome in the football community.”

After the announcement in 2021, he got full support from his club Adelaide United and fellow players. Cavallo also received messages of support from many high-profile football players, including Lionel Messi, Gerard Piqué, Marcus Rashford, Antoine Griezmann, Jordan Henderson, and Gary Lineker as well as fans, and celebrities such as Lil Nas X.

On Wednesday he showed the world his big step in klife when he posted photos on his Instagram account going down on one knee at an empty Stadium as he proposed to his fiancé Leighton Morrell followed by this caption thanking the club helping him actualize the engagement. “Thank you Adelaide United for helping set up this surprise.” Cavallo started.
“You’re endless support has meant so much to me. You have provided a safe space in football, one that I never in my dreams thought could ever be possible and encouraged me to live every day of my life authentically. It felt right to share this special moment on the pitch, where it all started.” Cavallo wrote.
