Former Manchester United and South Korea midfielder Ji-Sung Parkrevealed the weird diet that he had to take while he was growing up to become a professional footballer. The legendary midfielder had a successful career at Old Trafford where he spent 7 years at the club.
At a tender age, Ji-Sung Park had shown his ability to play football, where he attracted attention as one of the most promising young talents in South Korea and was scouted by a number of clubs. He was well known for his excellent work rate, his excellent dribbling and accurate passes but his football progress was at risk of stagnating because of his small physique required for a professional player as well as the body needed for a high-profile player.
In an attempt to get his son’s football career into track, Ji-Sung’s father Sung-jong quit his job to start a butcher shop in order to actualize his son’s football dream. Sung-jong would make trips from their hometown in Suwon to Goheung to get meat to feed him. Sung-jong not only fed Ji-Sung Park with different meats but also frogs, antlers and deer blood. His father would make protein drink made of wild frog’s soup, deer horns as well as deer blood in the belief that it would increase his son’s physical abilities in which he finally succeeded.
Back in 2011, in his last season with Manchester United, Ji-Sung Park revealed about this weird diet he had to take in order to make his football career turn into a reality. “My father went to catch wild frogs. I was skinny and weak, and my father heard their juice would give me size and strength. It tasted very, very bad, but I had to drink it because I wanted to be a footballer, and everyone said I needed to be bigger and stronger.”
“They said it was good for my health to become stronger, and I ate everything that would improve my health.”
Park Ji-Sung is one of the most successful players in football history from Asia continent, having won 19 trophies in his career where he was the first Asian player to win UEFA Champions League title as well as playing in the Champions League Final.
Wayne Rooney when asked about his time with his former teammate Park Ji-Sung he had a high praise on him saying, “If you mention Cristiano Ronaldo in front of a 12-year-old, they’ll say, ‘Yes, he’s a brilliant player for Manchester United’, whereas if you mention Park Ji-sung, they probably don’t know who he is, Yet all of us who played with Park know how important he was to our success.”
