Eliud Kipchoge clocked 2:06:50 as he finished in the 10th position in this year’s Tokyo Marathon held on Sunday 3rd March being the worst finish ever in his 11-year marathon career which also affected his earning in the 2024 Tokyo marathon awarding.

His fellow countryman Benson Kipruto won the race as he clocked 2:02:16 breaking Kipchoge’s course record he set during 2021 marathon where he clocked 2:02:40. Other Kenyan marathoners Timothy Kiplagat who clocked 2:02:55 and Vincent Ngetich Kipkemoi who clocked 2:04:18 to finish in the second and third place respectively.

Kipchoge’s 10th position finish was his worst ever which also earned him the lowest amount he has ever got in a marathon competition since making his marathon debut in Hamburg marathon in 2013. He previously finished in the 6th position during 2023 Boston marathon, as well as finishing in the eighth place during 2020 London marathon.

Benson Kipruto earned 11 million Japanese Yen for winning the race equivalent to Ksh.10,640,300 plus 3 million Japanese Yen (Ksh. 2,901,600) in bonus for breaking the course record by 24 seconds earning a total of Ksh. 13,547,000 for his two-hour job. Timothy Kiplagat walked away with 4 million Japanese Yen equivalent to Ksh. 3,868,000 for finishing second while Vincent Kipkemoi took home 2 million Japanese Yen equivalent to Ksh. 1,934,000. 

The Tokyo Marathon rewarding slots were limited for only top 1o performers, with Eliud Kipchoge finishing in the 10th place, it earned him the last prize of 100,000 Japanese Yen which is equivalent to  Ksh. 96,720 which is the lowest amount he has ever won in his marathon career.
