The 2022 Chicago marathon winner Benson Kipruto led other Kenyan athletes in 2024 Tokyo marathon held over the weekend on Sunday in capital city of Japan. Kipruto won this year’s Tokyo marathon edition after clocking 2:02:16 which was his personal best as well as breaking the course record for the event set by Eliud Kipchoge in 2021 Tokyo marathon where he clocked 2:02:40.

Other Kenyan marathoners Timothy Kiplagat who clocked 2:02:55 and Vincent Kipkemoi who clocked 2:04:18 as they finished in the second and third place respectively in Kenyan podium sweep. The 2021 Tokyo marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge finished 10th being his worst finish in a marathon competition since making his debut in 11 years.

Benson Kipruto, Timothy Kiplagat and Vincent Kipkemoi will be smiling all the way to the bank for their top performance in Tokyo Marathon. Kipruto will be the biggest beneficiary in the Tokyo Marathon championship as finished at the first place as well breaking the course record for the event. Meaning Kipruto will walk away with 11 million Japanese Yen which is equivalent to Ksh. 10,643,600 in addition to a 3 million Japanese Yen equivalent to Ksh. 2,903,400 as bonus for breaking the course record by 24 seconds. Earning a total of Ksh. 13,547,000 for his 2:02:16 Tokyo Marathon triumph.

Timothy Kiplagat also walks away with some good money as he finished second in the marathon, he will earn a total of 4 million Japanese Yen equivalent to Ksh. 3,870,800 while the third placed Vincent Kipkemoi will bag 2 million Japanese Yen equivalent to Ksh. 1,935,600. 

Meanwhile in Women’s marathon race, the Tokyo marathon defending champion Rosemary Wanjiru failed to defend her title as she finished in the second place as she clocked 2:16:14 behind Ethiopia’s Sutume Asefa Kebede who won the race after clocking 2:15:55. Wanjiru bags the same amount as Timothy Kiplagat did as she pockets 4 million Japanese Yen equivalent to Ksh. 3,870,800.
