Singer Otile Brown has flown off the handle after learning that MCSK and other CMOs have been helping themselves to part of his music royalties.

Otile, just like tens of other local musicians could not believe their eyes and ears after it emerged whatever they received as royalties for the previous quota was way less than what they should have rightly earned.

News about the disparities and underpayment of royalties to artists was first made public by Kenya Copyrights Board (KECOBO) Chairman Joshua Kutuny in a press conference.

Through the presser, Kutuny disclosed that CMOs, especially MCSK did not remit royalties to artists in the right manner as they kept millions of shillings for themselves.

In one instance, an artist like Otile Brown who was the highest earner in the said quota received KSh 120,000 instead of the rightful KSh 720,000 he was supposed to earn.

The evils did not happen to him alone as others too suffered the same fate.

The latest development infuriated Otile who took to social media to lament as he called out MCSK for chewing his royalties.

The musician used the opportunity to reveal how being an artist and surviving in the eco-system has never been a walk in the park.

According to Otile, the move by MCSK to remit peanuts to artists and remain with Lion’s share is evil and should not be allowed in the country.

“Shaking my head ….. and that’s my country 🇰🇪

Yani doo yangu umeamua tu utaifanyia venye unataka.. hamjui vile hii job hukuaga mental …

I’ll be coming for my money soon 😏
And to some of our leaders, that is normal… no honour at all,” He wrote.

His cry for justice touched the hearts of many Kenyans who thronged the comments section of his post to console him.

Others called out the government and MCSK for not caring about local creatives.

As earlier reported by a cross-section of the Kenyan media, KECOBO invited the EACC and DCI to probe what Joshua Kutuny termed as the disparity in amounts declared by the major three Collective Management Organisations (CMOs).

In a statement on Wednesday, February 21, Kutuny said the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK), Kenya Association of Music Producers (KAMP) and Performers Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK) jointly collected KSh 249,687,212.80 in royalties but there were disparities in amounts declared by individual entities.

“While KAMP and PRISK declared a collection of Sh249 million and they accounted for Sh61 million and Sh52.7 million, respectively, MCSK on its part declared receipts of Sh109 million representing a shortfall of Sh26 million,” Kutuny said.
