EACC DCI To Investigate MCSK CEO Ezekiel Mutua Following Nonini’s Saga
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is set to officially launch investigations into Ezekiel Mutua, the CEO of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK), following allegations of misappropriation of funds amounting to Ksh56 million meant for musicians’ royalties.
The directive comes in the wake of a demand by the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) for Mutua to be probed over the alleged financial impropriety.
In a letter addressed to EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak, KECOBO’s Executive Director Edward Sigei highlighted concerns regarding the unaccounted-for funds during a review of the performance of Collective Management Organisations (CMOs) on January 25, 2024.

Sigei expressed KECOBO’s suspicion that the funds had been either misappropriated or diverted for unauthorized purposes. Consequently, KECOBO urged the EACC to initiate investigations into the matter to ascertain the veracity of the allegations.
“We request you to commence investigations into possible fraud at the organisation,” Sigei stated in the letter, adding that KECOBO is prepared to provide further details to support the investigation.
As of now, the EACC has not issued any official statement regarding the commencement of investigations into the matter.

Meanwhile, MCSK CEO Ezekiel Mutua has vehemently denied the allegations, dismissing KECOBO’s move to involve the EACC as a form of intimidation. Through his verified social media account, Mutua described the allegations as baseless and accused KECOBO of tarnishing his reputation.
“This letter is part of the intimidation plan. Why would you stoop so low to malign people or intimidate them with such?” Mutua responded to the allegations.
The unfolding saga has drawn attention to the issue of transparency and accountability within the music industry, with stakeholders eagerly awaiting the outcome of the investigations into the alleged financial irregularities at MCSK.
