Wife, Family Members Arrested In Murder Of Local Government Surgeon

Joint police forces in the Albertine region and Masindi district in coordination with the Homicide Department of CID Headquarters have arrested a 31 year old teacher and housewife, Betty Cherotic together with four others in connection to the demise of Masindi District Health Officer, Dr. Abiriga Jino 58, who was brutally murdered on the night of 7th January, 2024.

 

According to police reports, the morning of the murder, the victim left his home in Kijura cell, central division in Masindi municipality to attend a friend’s wedding.

 

After the occasion, his driver dropped him off at home at around 9pm. Dr. Abiriga and his wife went to sleep on their two roomed house as the children including Aseru Angela 17 (daughter), Maureen Cherotic 14 (step daughter), Kenneth Cheprotich 11 (stepson), Jackline Afakoru 12, (niece), and Desire Arinaitwe, aged 8 (daughter to a family friend), slept in a separate unit enclosed in the same fence.

It was very unfortunate, that Dr. Abiriga was found dead lying dead with a deep cut on the neck and other multiple cuts on the head, and hand. His body was dumped 50 metres away from his home.

 

Police launched an immediate search was at deceased’s home and suspected blood stains were recovered from the walls of the bedroom and from under their marital bed.

 

Upon interrogation, the deceased’s wife revealed that he got a phone call by an unidentified person who required him to go and operate on a patient. She claimed he never came home but authorities failed to get evidence to back up her allegations.

 

For the blood spatters found in the bedroom, Cherotic claimed they were from her menstrual period.

 

“We wish to inform the public, that no matter how well, a cover up is made surrounding the heinous act, we will uncover the truth,

Our team of forensic experts, recovered blood stains and other samples for forensic analysis that will help establish, whether the victim was murdered from his house or elsewhere and the body dumped near his home,” the Uganda Police spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga revealed.

 

The suspects are currently being detained at Masindi Central Police Station as investigations continue.
