Chelsea will be travelling to Middlesbrough to face the Championship side for the Carabao Cup first leg of the semifinal on Tuesday, January 9th.

The Blues booked their spot in this season’s Carabao cup Semifinals after eliminating Newcastle United in the Quarter Finals in post-match penalties after a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

As the Blues travel to Riverside Stadium to play Boro in the first leg of the Semifinal and as the norm, the use of VAR has been crucial in such stages for the past three seasons, but for the time since the introduction of the VAR system, there will be no use of the Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in Chelsea versus Middlesbrough first leg fixture.

The reason as to why the VAR system will not be used in that fixture is due to the technology not being available in Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium.

The VAR system is installed immediately at the tunnel of every pitch to help the centre referee make some crucial decisions or rectify some decisions he had taken before.

Although, in the second leg of that semifinal which is scheduled to be played on January 23rd at Stamford Bridge, the VAR will be used as usual since the system is installed at Chelsea home ground unlike Boro’s Riverside Stadium.
