Kikuyu legendary singer behind the hit song Firirinda Dick Munyonyi is dead. Mr. Munyonyi died while receiving medication at Gatundu Level 5 on Saturday.

 

The celebrated Kikuyu benga has been battling tuberculosis since his debut song Firirinda in 1986.

 

Upon the release of the song, he went silent until in 2021 when one vernacular journalist Jeff Kuria replayed his song Firirinda awakening netizens to make joy over it.

Therein, former boss for Kenya Film Classification Board Ezekiel Mutua came in among other well-wishers to finance his medication.

 

Beside netizens support, Mr. Munyonyi has been irregularly getting admitted to hospital every now and then till his last breath on Saturday evening.

 

The singer has left behind an indelible mark in Kikuyu benga that will live in hearts of many especially Kikuyu community as a whole.

Further, late Mr. Dick Munyonyi will be remembered for singing in former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s wedding in 1989 by also releasing other songs like Mombasa, Loan amongst many.
