After 7-Year Battle With Leukemia, Candidate Dies Days To KCSE Exam

Clement Kariuki, a candidate at St. Peters Gathuthi-ini Day Mixed Secondary School in Ndia, Kirinyaga County, tragically passed away four days before the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams kick off..

 

According to his guardian, Millicent Wambui, who had been looking after him since his mother’s passing when he was in class six, Kariuki died while en route to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment.

“Clement Kariuki had been battling leukemia for the past seven years, often having to take breaks from school due to his condition,” explained Wambui.

 

Kariuki’s uncle, Jonathan Gathure, expressed their optimism that he would be able to sit for the exams and perform to the best of his abilities. “It is a heartbreaking loss that he passed away before taking his exams, leaving behind substantial medical bills,” Gathure lamented.

Today, approximately 903,260 candidates across the country are expected to sit for the exams, which officially commenced on October 23 with practical papers and will conclude on November 24.
