Dormitory Fire Kills Two Pupils, Leaves 12 Injured

Two students have been reported dead in a fire that gutted the boy’s dormitory at Kasaana Junior School located in Masaka City this morning.
The dormitory was occupied by close to 15 children of classes Top and Primary one. Police identified the deceased as Katende Malik and Katende Aloysius.

Southern Region deputy police spokesperson, Wandera Jammada revealed to journalists that they suspect the fire was due to a short circuit point where the school matron, Adong Christine was presumed to have been charging her phone from.
According to the police findings, the fire affected about 11 pupils and the matron.
“There shouldn’t be any kind of say that the fire was through an ill motive… But just a circuit,” Jammada gave his assessment about the fire.

The injured pupils include Mwanje Sharid, Ssenoga, Wasswa Alpha, Ahimbisibwe, Kisomose Austin, Matovu Grant, Mwesigye Arnold, Muganga Martin among others. These were rushed to Masaka Referral Hospital for treatment and had their parents visit to check on them.
Wandera urged the parents and the pupils not to panic as the situation was calming down.
“We are going to talk to the children to go back to class so that business continues,” he said.
