Chelsea Reject Manchester United Opening Bid For Mason Mount

Chelsea yesterday rejected Manchester United’s opening offer of £40 million for Mason Mount; despite having only 12 months left on his contract, the Blues value the 24-year-old at over £70 million.

As his term at Stamford Bridge approaches its final year, Mount has so far declined to extend it. Chelsea is open to selling Mount this summer if its asking price of roughly £70 million is met.

Given that Mount, 24, might leave on a free transfer at the end of the current season, United is eager to entice him to Old Trafford but does not agree with Chelsea’s assessment of him. Chelsea is willing to keep Mount past the summer if conditions are not met.

The Red Devils are anticipated to return with an improved offer that may be closer to £50 million, but they are hesitant to go that high and would require Chelsea to decrease their asking price to finalize a deal.

Mauricio Pochettino, the incoming manager of Chelsea, has made it clear that he wants to keep Mount at Stamford Bridge, but negotiations for an extension have stalled, and United is one of a few teams eager to capitalize on the uncertainty.
