Grief gripped the residents of Katoogo Mbuya after a fierce fire gutted a house claiming the life of a one year old toddler.

The deceased was identified as Weere Kampala Teras and it is believed that the incident happened on Tuesday night when both his parents had left the house to go for work.

According to eyewitnesses, the toddler had been left behind under the care of her 13-year-old aunty. She is said to have locked the deceased in the house together with a burning charcoal stove to run to the nearby shops.

It is believed that the fire started when one of the curtains accidentally got into contact with the charcoal stove and spread through the entire house, killing the baby and destroying all the household property.

According to Nakintu Phina, the woman representative of the area, the residents tried to put out the fire to save the baby who was crying inside the house but by the time they broke down the door, he had burned to ashes.

The deceased’s parents Aculu Hellen, 21, and Walesa Nathan revealed that they got the news of their son’s demise while at work where they had gone in the morning. On arrival at the scene, Aculu fainted and was rushed to a nearby clinic for first aid.

Police from Mbuya together with Jinja Road Police arrived at the scene and conveyed the body of the deceased to Mulago mortuary.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Onyango Patrick confirmed the tragic incident and narrated how the firemen found it difficult to put out the fair due to the narrow pathways.
