Woman Fakes Her Child’s Kidnap To Extract Millions From Husband
Police in Katwe have arrested a mother for faking her child’s kidnap in order to extract money from her husband.
Caroline Kobugabe allegedly hatched the plan to demand Ush 50 million in ransoms from her businessman husband identified as Victo Ekachelan to help rescue their two year old child.
On that fateful day, Ekachelan received a phone call from his wife asking him for money which he sent immediately. He reveals that she was very calm and did not show signs of distraught that anything had gone wrong.
“I had promised to give her some money but I kept on forgetting. When she called me again to remind me, I sent her the money immediately before dropping the call,” Ekachelan narrated.
It was shortly after receiving the money that Kobugabe called her husband again, this time letting him know that their child had been kidnapped. She claimed the kidnappers had taken their child to Bweyogerere and wanted her to follow with the ransom to rescue her.
Ekachelan immediately informed the police who began the search for the kidnapped child. He was however shocked when he received a phone call stating that his wife had been arrested with the said missing child in Bweyogerere where she planned to call her husband and demand for the money.
While at the police station, Kobugabe pleaded guilty to kidnapping her own child and explained that she used the trick as payback to her child’s father who she says had both ignored her and also failed to provide for their family.
“He does not give me time or listen to me. I have been going through a tough situation for three weeks and wanted to talk to him deeply but he has constantly ignored me,” Kobugabe revealed.
Amidst tears, she apologized to her husband but he did not listen to her plea, insisting that she must face the courts of law to answer for her crimes.
Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed Kobugabe’s arrest and noted that she will be charged for giving false information to a police officer and would be charged in court.
