Woman Jailed For Faking Pregnancy, Stealing Baby
Police in Yumbe District, West Nile Uganda is holding in custody a woman over accusations of feigning pregnancy and stealing a baby from Yumbe Referral Hospital.
Health workers at the facility revealed that Omiza Raima, 22, a resident of Akiligba Village without the knowledge and permission of the midwives, admitted herself to the maternity ward for close to three days. She allegedly occupied one of the hospital beds at the ward fully equipped with delivery kits and an antenatal card, making it hard for the attendants to know her intention.
Kassim Rukia, the hospital administrator, revealed that the accused on Sunday moved to the ICU where newborns with complications were kept for monitoring and tried to pick a baby but the mother was alert. When asked why she was close to her baby, Omiza claimed she was the mother of the baby who was lying next to her target.
When the nurse on duty was alerted about Omiza’s claims, she was quick to respond because she knew the mother of the second baby. She switched ownership to a set of twins in the same room but fortunately the nurse knew the mother too.
It was then that the police were informed and got the suspect arrested and detained at Yumbe Central Police. Omiza admitted to having lied about her pregnancy, stating that her actions were done out of pressure from her in-laws who badly wanted a baby from her since she had been married for over a year without any.
“I have a baby girl with another man and my second child died also from a different man. When I married my current husband, who stays in Kampala, I failed to conceive,” she said.
