Woman Survives Mob Justice For Poisoning Village Animals

Police in Mityana have put behind bars a woman believed to have administered a dangerous and toxic substance that killed numerous animals and birds that belonged to fellow residents.

The accused identified as Harriet Namala, a resident of Butambo-Kikumbi Village, Mityana Municipality survived being lynched by the angry mob that stormed her shop after being tipped off that she was behind the massive death of the animals.

While being quizzed about the poison, Namala revealed that she spread the poison with an intention of killing rodents that were destroying the crops in her garden. Her submission was met with a lot of resistance with locals wondering why when she administered the poison; she had her animals and birds under lock and key.

“The way she kept her animals under lock and key, she would have warned fellow residents to do the same if she was really trying to kill the pests in her garden,” a concerned resident questioned.

Namala is said to have used Furadan, a brutal pesticide that is known to be very toxic to non-target species, and based on its high acute toxicity, its use has been restricted or banned in many countries.

The local leaders moved around the area warning residents not to eat any dead animals as they would all be poisoned.
