Cyclists Drag, Beat Thief From Hospital Bed
Boda Boda cyclists in Mpigi District have dragged a motorcycle thief identified as 36-year-old Mudafilu Ssekabira for robbing and killing one of their own.
It is said that Ssekabira was nabbed red handed riding a stolen motorcycle that had a tracker through which he was followed. The stolen boda boda was confiscated, leaving the thief to face the wrath of the mob that had gathered to witness.
Ssekabira was beaten by the mob but luckily got saved by the police that whisked him away to Mpigi Health Center IV for treatment. They however did not give him enough security giving room to the angry group of riders to storm the facility demanding to have access to the room where he was being treated from.
When they finally located him, the angry mob broke the padlock that doctors had put on his room to protect him and beat him from his hospital bed.
The mob did this while interrogating him seeking to know how many boda boda cyclists have fallen victim to their robbery spree. Ssekabira who was already bleeding revealed that he was working for a businessman only identified as Juma who owns a garage in Masaka, where all stolen motorcycles are assembled. He said his only job was to transport fellow thieves who move around at night looking for their next prey.
They further dragged the already wounded Ssekabira through the hospital hallway and when they landed him outside, they gave him a thorough beating that rendered him unconscious.
Masaka Police Patrol arrived at the scene minutes after Ssekabira had been badly beaten and carried him back to the health center for further treatment but were stopped by doctors who blamed them for not responding to the crime scene on time.
“It looks like the police are promoting theft. They bring these criminals and dump them at our hospital premises with no security, making it easy for them to be killed,” a health worker at the scene revealed.
Police spokesperson Mpigi ASP Lydia Tumushabe confirmed the incident and condemned the acts of mob justice. She noted that investigations were underway to find the culprits that took part in battering the suspect.
