Chimpanzees Snatch Baby, Kill Her In Plain Sight
Fear has gripped residents of Kyamajaka Village in Kagadi District after a group of chimpanzees killed a new born baby and injured more than ten other people during the attack.
According to eyewitnesses, the chimpanzees targeted the three months old baby only identified as Karungi, a daughter to Muhereza Bitanihire. It is said the wild creatures snatched the baby who was laid down to sleep in the same garden where her mother was busy digging.
They tore her into pieces digging through the hands, back and the stomach which left her intestines exposed. Following the attack, the baby unfortunately breathed her last as they were rushing her to Mulago Referral Hospital for further treatment.
The residents have revealed that hundreds of chimpanzees and gorillas frequently visit the villages destroying crops and attacking humans. They say they have cried out to Uganda Wildlife Authority to capture the animals and take them to the game parks but they have not responded.
We are requesting UWA to come and shift these animals and take them to where the rest are found, especially national parks,” a resident said.
Kibuuka Leo, the village chairperson has revealed that the community tried so hard to save the children in vain. Some are admitted in hospitals treating injuries sustained during these attacks.
The village is surrounded by Kangombe Village reserve and James Byamukama, a representative from National Forestry Authority has asked residents to stop attacking and going after the chimpanzees.
“When people disturb them, they also can organize and come back to hit people. They are not about to give up.” He said.
