There was drama in Bukedea after a community lined up residents and publicly flogged them for not attending burial ceremonies.

 

Among the people who were caned include one woman and six men. These are accused of snubbing burial ceremonies of fellow residents who lose their loved ones and instead opt to go to bars and drink.

 

According to community members, this activity is a parish event where members are openly punished if they do not abide by the rules.

 

“If you do not obey then you do not survive the caning of the community. So we are here witnessing this.’ A witness revealed.

 

The group of seven was laid down flat on the ground before the masses and was flogged two canes each. The ones who tried to dodge the canes were manhandled to the ground to have their share.

 

The way in which people from different parts of the country pay their final respects to their departed ones varies from culture to culture. From time immemorial, burial ceremonies have been honored and in many cultures, people were not allowed to go on about their daily activities when a burial is taking place.
