Kalenjins form the majority of teachers employed by the government.

 

This is according to teachers service commission CEO Nancy Macharia who appeared before a House committee on Friday.

 

Ms Nancy Macharia while before National Assembly’s Committee ofNational Cohesion and Equal Opportunity said the Kalenjin Community are 59,538 of the total 346,760 workforce.

 

Kikuyus number are 59,010 of the total, Luhyas (52,882), Luos (40,657), Kambas (39,807), Kisiis (30,317) and Meru (22,164.

 

Macharia added that TSC has employed one Kenyan European, three  foreigners, nine Kenyan Asians, and 14 Njemps.

 

“The four communities with the highest number of teachers employed by TSC happen to make up the biggest majority of the population. The figure is very relative to the population of the country. The commission has achieved ethnic balance at various stages of appointment in that there is no representation of more than one-third of staff coming from the same ethniccommunitym” Said Macharia.

 

The CEO assured that the commission embraces fair competition and merit as the basis of appointments and promotions.

 

The CEO also said that the low-level cadre carries the majority of teachers standing at 233,965.

 

Macharia said they comprise teachers at grades B5 and C1 for primary teachers and grades C3 and C2 for secondary school.
