Residents of Masese, Jinja District are pinning the Uganda police for allegedly arresting, detaining and torturing their fellow resident to death while in detention.

Derrick Kitamilike (now the deceased) was among the youths that were rounded up by police from Kikaramoja slum for committing a number of crimes. He died as he was being transported to hospital where he was to get treatment for his injuries.

Speaking to journalists, the deceased’s father, Enock Kabale revealed that the police were not transparent in the arrest of his son and confirmed that he was bleeding by the time he was being taken to police.

“I was surprised to see my son being dragged to the police bleeding and in handcuffs. One policeman spoke to me rudely when I tried to inquire what he had done,” He said.

Another resident claims to have rushed to police and asked officers to take Derrick to hospital as he was bleeding profusely from his injuries on the head.

“They had big sticks and some had knives on his arrest. They handcuffed him and while taking him to the police, they chose to pass in the bushes where people did not see them. “He was bleeding so badly and I told the OC to get him help because they had beaten him. He instead told me to step out of the police station,” he said.

Police through their spokesman in the area, James Mubi denied the allegations stating that Derrick was beaten by the mob. He accuses the village chairman Joseph Mweru and his cabinet of having a hand in the unfortunate death of Derrick.

“We went to save him from the mob. The LC1 has an idea on his death and we have summoned them to answer some questions regarding the case.” Mubi told journalists.
